Helene Relief Committee

The Helene Relief Committee was formed at St. John’s to respond to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. Since then, the committee has continued to serve the evolving needs of our neighbors through relief, advocacy, and compassionate outreach.

Recent News: Major Grant Received

In June, the committee, in partnership with Colaborativa La Milpa, applied for a diocesan grant to assist individuals still struggling after the storm. Thanks to the dedication of the committee, the skillful grant writing of La Milpa’s leadership, and the loving support of Mother Erin and Rev. Kelsey Davis, a $20,000 grant was awarded by the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina. With an additional $2,000 from St. John’s parishioners and friends, the committee is now able to support rent and utility relief for families in need.

Colaborativa La Milpa is a grassroots nonprofit based in the Emma community of Buncombe County. Many residents there work in hospitality and continue to face hardship as a result of the storm.

Relief Efforts So Far

In the early months after the hurricane, St. John’s mobilized quickly:

  • Delivered seven vehicle-loads of emergency supplies to storm-affected areas.
  • Partnered with Birthstone, based in Sylva, to support perinatal and infant care across the region.
  • Distributed essential items like hygiene products, baby care items, food, propane, gas, and water.
  • Coordinated with the Episcopal Diocese of Western NC and local networks to get help to where it was most needed.
  • Provided childcare, internet access, and community prayer during the height of the crisis.
  • A particularly touching moment came when a child from St. John's gifted two stuffed animals to a young girl displaced from Mitchell County, a reminder of the kindness and generosity that has defined this ministry.

Ongoing Needs & How You Can Help

As immediate emergencies have settled, our focus has shifted to supporting long-term recovery for individuals and families who remain displaced.

Here’s how you can help now:

  • Pray for those still rebuilding their lives.
  • Donate water and non-perishable food items — these staples are always needed.
  • Provide financial support
    • To help cover housing and utility costs for those still in transition, write "Helene Relief" in the memo line of your donation to St. John’s.
  • Volunteer your time or service — especially as we prepare for the winter months ahead.
  • Offer to drive or help load supplies when deliveries resume.
